So, you have a home business idea and you want to make money on the Internet, Congratulations! and welcome to the hectic world of entrepreneurship. There is a lot to learn but your effort will be worth it. The thrill of starting and growing your business, the flexibility and freedom to set your own hours, and the possibilities of ever-increasing financial rewards are all wonderful reasons to start your home based business.

Now that you’ve decided to start a home business, there are seven tips I can give you or ‘work from home gems’ as I call them which will help you to get your home business off to the strongest possible start :-

1) Planning must be balanced with action. One of the common pitfalls to successful entrepreneurship is getting too caught up in action without enough planning. Take the time to plan your goals then work backwards and create step by step action plans to achieve those goals as you go. Don’t be too keen to blast off and expend all your energy only to find that your efforts have not achieved the required result. Work smarter not just harder. Once you have the plans, then it’s time to take the action.

2) This is one of the best work from home gems that I could give you and it is often overlooked. Set up a separate working space in your home. It doesn’t matter if this is a small bedroom, a part of the garage, or a corner of the living room. The important thing is that it must be a space that you can designate as your working area. This will give you the space and privacy you need to develop your home business.

3) Make sure your working space is stocked with all the administration materials that you will need. This sounds basic, perhaps, but one underlying element of success is that you have easy access to the tools, materials, and other resources you need. Gathering everything close by also keeps you from wasting time searching for it, so this step can be considered a time management strategy too.

4) Speaking of time management, your fourth step in my work from home gems is to define the parameters of your business. What days and hours will you work? Don’t be a slave to the PC. When will you market? When will you provide services or products to clients? How will you keep all of this straight?

5) One of the fastest ways to grow any work from home business is to make connections with other people or in other words network with them. Be sure to share your enthusiasm and passion with others at every opportunity. Let people know who you are and what you offer. Remember, people can’t buy if they don’t know you’re selling.

6) If you want to be treated professionally, you must present a professional image. Set up a separate bank account for your business. Install a separate phone and fax line. Create professional marketing materials. Be pleasant and courteous in all your customer facing interactions, in other words be someone people want to do business with.

7) Automate your business as much as possible. Remember what we said before about planning, you are just one person (for now)and might have a lot of extra time to take care of all the details. This might be fine for now, but won’t work into the future as you get busier. It’s best to set up automatic systems and processes right from the start to free valuable time to concentrate on the most profitable activities.

These seven tips are my work from home gems and will get your home business started (and growing) in the right direction.
